A Bulgarian football club has issued
an apology after mistakenly holding a minute's silence for a former player who
is still alive.
The bizarre incident occurred before
a recent match involving FC Belasitsa Petrich, who paid tribute to their
supposed late former player, Georgi Dimitrov. However, to the club’s
embarrassment, Dimitrov was later confirmed to be alive.
The mistake arose due to a mix-up
with another individual of the same name. In a statement, the club admitted to
the error, calling it an "unfortunate misunderstanding" and
expressing regret for any confusion caused.

“We deeply apologise to Georgi
Dimitrov and his family for the distress this has caused. The club relied on
incorrect information, and we are taking steps to ensure such mistakes do not
happen again,” the statement read.
Local media reported that Dimitrov,
who played for the club in the past, was shocked by the tribute but took the
blunder in good humor. “It was a surprise to say the least,” he reportedly
said.
The incident quickly gained
attention on social media, with fans both amused and baffled by the mistake.
Many compared it to previous football mishaps, including clubs mistakenly
announcing signings or sending out pre-written match reports with incorrect scores.
Despite the embarrassment, FC Belasitsa Petrich hopes to move on from the incident, ensuring their future tributes are fact-checked with absolute certainty.
