State has signed the Lagos Electricity Bill 2024 into law, a landmark
move aimed at transforming the state's energy landscape. The signing ceremony
took place on Tuesday at the Lagos House in Ikeja.
The new law outlines a comprehensive strategy to tackle energy challenges in the state, paving the way for economic and industrial growth. According to Gboyega Akosile, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, this initiative builds on the 2023 Federal Government approval that allows states to generate and distribute electricity independently. “This bill is a critical step toward ensuring a 24-hour electricity supply across Lagos,” Akosile stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the
significance of the bill, noting its role in positioning Lagos as a global city
with reliable and continuous power supply. The legislation is expected to
reduce Lagos’s dependence on the national grid and promote energy security.
In a related development, the Lagos
State Government recently invited independent power producers and energy
solution providers to bid for the construction of gas-fired power plants. This
initiative aims to close the state’s longstanding electricity gap and is part
of the Clean Lagos Electricity Market project.
The call for proposals was jointly announced by Biodun Ogunleye, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, and Bukola Odoe, Special Adviser from the Office of Public-Private Partnerships. The government’s collaboration with private sector partners is expected to significantly enhance the state’s energy capacity, supporting its vision of a sustainable and energy-secure future.
