GROWING INSECURITY: IKORODU RESIDENTS CRY OUT FOR SANWO-OLU'S INTERVENTION

The residents of Gberigbe community in Ikorodu, Lagos State, have raised the alarm over growing insecurity in their neighbourhoods, and have called on the governor of the state, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to come to their rescue.

According to some residents, recent occurrences have made it imperative for the state government to take security in the area very seriously, in order to guarantee the safety of lives and property of those living in the area.

Ekundayo Salami, a resident who spoke to our correspondent disclosed that residents of the community, a suburb in Lagos been living in terror for over two years, as a result of criminal activities by some daredevil elements, who sneak into the community, rob people of their valuables, leaving pain and anguish afterwards.

Hear him: “Many people have had their homes broken into while they were away; while others have been confronted by armed criminals who occasionally arrive with POS machines to forcefully take money from their hapless victims.

“To a large extent, many residents now live in fear, while others are considering a possible relocation. The security of human life and properties in the Gberigbe community has turned into a mirage, leaving the distressed residents in awe as they engage their CDA executives in constant discussions, which usually border on how to secure their community through communal efforts.

“Ominira Estate, Ewu- Owa, Ikorodu, are some of the neighbourhoods that are worst affected.”

He added that the community shares boundaries with Ijede community, and it's located right before Imota.

“Vandalism, theft, and brutal invasion of this community are largely as a result of carried out by some of these criminals,” Salamis added.

The CDA Chairman, Mr. Remi Idowu, has assured his fellow community residents efforts were being made to draw the attention of the Lagos State government for urgent intervention.

An unnamed resident who spoke to our correspondent said the most recent criminal invasion into happened on Wednesday and Thursday, the 14th and 15th of July, 2021 respectively. The incident, according to the resident took place at the same address, same facility, on those two consecutive days.

“It was on the second day of invasion that luck ran out on the criminal and was apprehended and now being detained at Imota Police Station, in a neighbouring community, in Ikorodu. The criminal sustained some degrees of injuries as a result of his fall into a ditch while attempting to escape,” the resident narrated.

As of the time of filing this report, the burglary suspect was being interrogated, the police authorities in the Division has assured that the criminal will be charged to court forthwith as soon as investigations were concluded.
