Reports coming in from Bayelsa State are quite disturbing as A 100-level student of the state-owned Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma, Southern Ijaw, has been feared killed by an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
According
to The Nation, the incident occurred at
about 10.30pm on Saturday. The furore that followed threw the student community
into mourning.
Eye
witnesses claimed the incident was as result of the professional misconducts of
the NSCDC operative.
Trouble, according to sources, began when the security personnel attached to a politician reportedly cocked his gun to fire some shots announcing the arrival of his principal to the area. However, it turned out that the bullets hooked in the magazine chamber. And in an attempt to free the magazine chamber, the gun went off as the riffle was pointed at passersby rather than away from them.
In the process, an undergraduate identified as
Obinna in the Efeke Ama area of the university community was hit. He was later pronounced dead at the Tantua
hospital while the killer NSCDC operative was handed over to the police in
Ammassoma as investigations on the incident have commenced.
Obinna
was said to be a student at the Petrochemical Department, Faculty of
Engineering before his untimely death
