OYO GOVERNOR BANS DRIVERS UNION IN THE STATE

In what appears to be a
lasting solution to the incessant crises that has become the hall mark of the
activities of commercial drivers in the state, the newly sworn in Executive Governor
of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde has banned the National Union of Road
Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state.
This was announced by the Chief
of Staff to the governor, Bisi Ilaka, on Friday.
According to him, the proscription
became necessary as a means of putting an end to the violence and crises that
often arise within the union.
It would be recalled that
on May 29, 2019, as the inauguration of the governor was ongoing, elements
suspected to members of the union had disrupted activities around the Liberty
Stadium venue of the event. Sources hinted of the plan by members of a faction
of the union to effect a violent change in the Union’s leadership on the
inauguration day.
No fewer than six arrests
had been made by the police command in the state, as a consequence.
Residents in the state had
continued to witness tension particularly in Ibadan the state capital a couple of
other major towns following the election of the Governor on the March 9, 2019 general
elections. His defeat had not been
accepted by a vast majority of the Union, who are alleged to have close
relationship with the now out-gone governor, Abiola Ajimobi of the All
Progressives Congress, APC. The current governor is of the Peoples Democratic
Party, PDP.
NURTW in Oyo State has a history
of violence, resorting in its leadership often pledging allegiance to opposing
political actors in the state, in which lives have occasionally been lost
needlessly.
